Careline 2016

The Iron County Cancer Unit board members would like to thank everyone for their contributions to assist our local cancer patients this past year. We had 46 patient applications. Because of the increase in our financial support , starting January 2017, we were able to raise the amount given from $650 per patient year. A patient year starts when they call and apply for assistance and continues until that date the following year. Patients may be assisted with Prostheses (wig/breast), Food Supplements, Colostomy Supplies, Cost of Transportation, Meals and Lodging for out of town treatment, Incontinent Supplies, & Respite Care. We also have a loan closet with a variety of medical equipment and supplies that have been donated. Our equipment may be used for as long as needed by a cancer patient without any charge. We have several requests for them every year. The Iron County Cancer Unit operates on a budget of $36,000 per year with an average of 45-50 applications per year. Operating expenses include rent- $250 per month for the building where the equipment is stored and maintained, electric, insurance, telephone, internet, and office supplies. All work is done by volunteers and 100% of donations stay in Iron County to benefit our local cancer patients. The Iron County Cancer Unit is a 501©(3) non-profit organization. We are not affiliated with the American Cancer Society of any other cancer organization. Only checks made out to the Iron County Cancer Unit will benefit this organization. Our mailing address is PO Box 45, Iron River, Michigan, 49935. For more information our phone number is 906-265-4420. We thank you for the trust and support of all who have helped make it possible to do the work that we have been able to do the last 18 years. Be assured the patients and families are truly grateful to have somewhere to turn to in their time of great need. Some of them have on going expenses that last for several years. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY, Iron County Board Members Linda Colombino, President Beverley Dallafior, Vice President Kevin Isaacson, Treasurer Dale Holm, Secretary Teresa Sabotta, Trustee Chris Shamion, Trustee

Fund Raising

Our biggest fund raiser is the WIKB radiothon. This production is much appreciated. Pledge Day May 18, 2017 on WIKB.

How Funds are Used

Currently each applicant is eligible for $650 cash assistance per year to be put toward the cost of transportation, meals, and lodging for out of town treatment; prosthesis; food supplements; colostomy supplies; cancer related medications; and respite care. The Iron County Cancer Unit also operates a loan closet with assorted equipment and supplies for the patient’s care and comfort at home. These items can be used for as long as needed. We have been averaging 45-50 applications a year. Our operating expenses include $250 per month rent, insurance, electric, equipment maintenance, telephone/internet, and office supplies. We make every effort to be as frugal with funds as we can. Our rent increased $50 per month this past year. It may not sound like much, but that is a tank or two of gas taken away from mileage money for applicants.

We are an All-Volunteer Organization

We are an independent organization, and not associated with any other cancer organization. Our goal is to provide for the raw needs of our applicants. Could you image being told you have cancer and need to see an out of town doctor, but can’t affrd a motel? Or you need a temporary wheelchair to be able to leave your house with nowhere to turn? That’s where we come in. We are the only service of this kind in the county. We have serviced the county for 17 years. We are extremely grateful for your trust and assistance in serving our purpose.
